Burnout and grit in student physical therapists before and after terminal clinical education experiences: a prospective longitudinal study of a single class-year cohort

Rationale: Burnout has been reported by graduate healthcare students during several phases of preprofessional education. The purpose this study was to explore changes in levels Doctor Physical Therapy (DPT) student burnout and grit before after clinical Additional aims included exploring how might differ based on gender over time what relationships exist between population. Methods: All enrolled third year DPT (n = 50) at a single physical therapist education program participated study. Participants were surveyed using the Maslach Inventory Human Services Survey 12-Item Grit Scale end curricular Year 3 graduation terminal experiences. Descriptive, exploratory, comparative statistical methods used. Results: Male participants significantly decreased emotional exhaustion (EE) from graduation, p ≤ 0.0001. Overall, cohort EE, F(1,48) 12.35, 0.001, d 0.44 increased personal accomplishment, 13.322, 0.58 main effect scores also significant, 0.035. A moderate inverse relationship existed EE r –0.447, 0.01. Conclusions: Cohort did not meet criteria definition for burnout; mean accomplishment subscale changed time. start experiences that dropped low compared female students. Student high recent investigations other cohorts. may have protective against experiencing burnout. Meshterms: Burnout, Professional; Therapists/education; Achievement.
